Swiggy Govt Tie-Up Targets Youth, Women for Gig Jobs via National Career Service Portal

2 minute read

The Ministry of Labour & Employment and Swiggy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an aim to increase the employment of the gig and logistics sector through the National Career Service (NCS) portal.

Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya expressed that Swiggy can potentially create “12 lakh job opportunities in the next 2–3 years.” “While Swiggy will gain access to a diverse, skilled, and job-ready talent pool, lakhs of job seekers across the country will benefit from enhanced visibility and access to employment opportunities,” said the Union Minister, referring to it as a win-win situation.

Swiggy will integrate its job opportunities through the API integration to “focus on inclusive hiring, promoting opportunities for youth, women, and those seeking flexible work.”

Why It Matters:

The National Career Service portal was launched as a “one-stop solution that provides a wide array of employment and career-related services to the citizens of India” back in 2015 as a five-year plan. As of January 31, 2025, the NCS has “1.25 crore active job seekers and 40 lakh registered employers”, said Union Minister Dr. Mandaviya in the press release.

Earlier in April, Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys and founding chairman of Aadhaar (UIDAI), also expressed his idea of having a “population-scale formalisation” to increase the scope of employment. He was proposing the National Portable Credential System, a platform of professional credentials that may act like a mix of DigiLocker and LinkedIn.

This comes amidst the Minister of Commerce and Industries, Piyush Goyal’s recent remark on Indian startups, especially the quick commerce and food and service delivery apps. “What are India’s startups of today? We are focused on food delivery apps, turning unemployed youths into cheap labour so the rich can get their meals without moving out of their houses,” said Piyush Goyal at Startup Maha Kumbh.
