A 45-year-old man was beaten to death near Vedaranyam on Wednesday following a land dispute. Police have arrested a couple in connection with the murder.

The deceased has been identified as Marimuthu, 45, son of Narayanan, a resident of Kalaignar Nagar in Thennampulam. There had been an ongoing land dispute between the families of Marimuthu’s relative Panneerselvam, 50, and his younger brother Sundaramurthy.

Marimuthu had allegedly been speaking in support of Sundaramurthy in the dispute, which enraged Panneerselvam. On Wednesday, Panneerselvam, along with his wife Susheela, 48, and son Akash, 28, allegedly intercepted Marimuthu while he was travelling on a two-wheeler near Shenbagarayanallur and attacked him with wooden sticks.

Marimuthu sustained serious injuries and died while being taken to the hospital.

Based on a complaint, the Kariyapattinam police have registered a case and arrested Panneerselvam and Susheela. Further investigation is underway.
