Two days after a woman and her grandson were found murdered in Doddagajanur village in Talavadi, the police arrested a man and a woman in connection with the case on Tuesday.
On April 13, the bodies of Chikkamma (55) and her grandson Ragavan (11) were found at their residence. Preliminary investigations revealed that both had been attacked with a weapon the previous night, resulting in their deaths. The Talavadi police registered a case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and a special team, led by Sathyamangalam Deputy Superintendent of Police, was formed to nab the accused.
Investigations pointed to G. Nagesh (45), a JCB owner and operator from the same village, who reportedly had financial dealings with Chikkamma. He was also said to be in a relationship with M. Bagya, a resident of the same village. After learning of their relationship, Chikkamma reportedly informed Bagya’s parents, who subsequently warned their daughter. This led to enmity between Bagya and Chikkamma. Bagya hatched a plan and persuaded Nagesh to carry it out.
On the night of April 12, Nagesh went to Chikkamma’s house and got into an altercation with her. He then attacked her with a knife and a hammer, killing her. He also killed Ragavan, who was asleep at the time. After committing the murders, Nagesh reportedly stole 30.05 grams of gold jewellery from an almirah before fleeing the scene.
Based on his confession, additional charges under Sections 332(a), 309(4) read with 311 and 49 of the BNS were added to the case.
Both Nagesh and Bagya were arrested, produced before the court, and remanded to judicial custody. They have been lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison.
