Hoax bomb threats spark tension at court complexes

Published - April 15, 2025 08:31 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Tension gripped the District Court Complex in Vanchiyoor and the Court Complex in Attingal following bomb threats that were reported on Tuesday afternoon. The threats, however, were later confirmed to be hoaxes.

According to official sources, the threat was received via. email around 1:30 p.m. at the official email addresses of both court complexes. The message “instructed” the authorities to evacuate the premises by 3:30 p.m., warning that explosives would be detonated thereafter. The email apparently referenced “some matters related to (AIADMK general secretary) Edappadi K. Palaniswami.”

Soon, K-9 dog squads and Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads were rushed to both court complexes. Court proceedings were temporarily disrupted, while those present at the complexes were briefly evacuated as precautionary checks were carried out. No explosives were found during the search operations. The police have launched investigations to trace the origin of the threats.

This incident comes just a month after a similar bomb scare at the Thiruvananthapuram Collectorate, which also turned out to be a hoax. The incident, however, took a bizarre turn when swarms of honeybees attacked people gathered in the area after the squads accidentally disturbed beehives during their inspection.

Prior to the incident, several hotels in the city also received false bomb threats.
