Haryana health team cracks down on illegal sex determination racket in UP, nabs 3
Rohtak:To stop diagnostic centres from carrying out sex determination tests, the Rohtak district health department conducted a raid in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, and apprehended three individuals, including a BUMS doctor, red-handed while performing a foetal sex determination test.
The raid was carried out by Rohtak district team headed by Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act nodal officer Dr Vishwajeet Rathi, along with Dr Sanjeev Malik, Dr Vishal Chaudhary, and Ranjit. The case was registered at Bijnor City police station, and an investigation is under way.
The crackdown stems from an earlier raid conducted on April 12 at Bharadwaj Hospital in Kharkhoda, Sonipat, where it was revealed that a woman from Chandigarh underwent a sex determination test arranged by Dr Tamanna, a BAMS practitioner from Kharkhoda. Upon discovering the foetus was female, the woman was allegedly given abortion pills, resulting in a forced abortion. During the Kharkhoda raid, the health department seized two MTP kits from the hospital.
Following this lead, a decoy operation was launched at Royal RJ Hospital in Bijnor, where the BUMS doctor was caught in the act. CCTV footage from the hospital further confirmed that the Chandigarh woman also underwent a sex determination test there on April 11.
Dr Rathi stated that out of Rs 20,000 paid to the agent for the illegal procedure, Rs 19,000 was recovered during the raid. A case was registered against multiple persons, including BUMS doctor Masood from Bijnor, BAMS doctor Tamanna from Kharkhoda, a woman named Divya who underwent the procedure, an agent from Bijnor, and the driver involved in transporting the decoy patient.
