Asking officials to respond immediately to problems faced by people during the rainy season, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna on Tuesday told those involved in disaster management to be prepared to handle all eventualities during the monsoon.

Chairing a meeting at the Udupi City Municipality to review preparations made to face the monsoon, Mr. Suvarna asked MESCOM officials to trim tree branches near power supply lines. He asked officials to replace the lines and electricity poles that could pose potential danger to human lives in case of heavy winds and showers.

He asked offciials to hire workers on a contract basis to manage emergencies during the monsoon and strengthen the emergency response mechanism.

The Forest Department, Mr. Suvarna said, should remove roadside trees that were likely to fall. During emergencies, the department should be ready to respond quickly, he reiterated.

The MLA asked Minor Irrigation Department officials to dredge rajakaluves and other major drains. The Public Works personnel were asked to dredge roadside drains and also clear weed growing on the roadside.

“The Health Department should be prepared to prevent communicable diseases during the monsoon. It should also carry out regular cleanliness drives in schools, colleges and hostels,” he said.

City Municipal Council president Prabhakar Poojary and officials from other departments participated in the meeting.
