The job working powerloom unit owners in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts, who are on an indefinite strike since March 19, have decided to strengthen their agitation and go on indefinite fast from April 16, 2025.
E.M. Bhoopathi, president of the Coimbatore Tiruppur district job working powerloom unit owners association, said the Coimbatore district Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar called for a meeting on Tuesday and said the textile owners agreed for 7 % per cent hike in wages from the wages agreed in 2022.
More than one lakh powerlooms that do job work for fabric manufacturers in the two districts stopped production last month demanding a hike in wages.
They claimed that the fabric manufacturers paid wages agreed in 2014 and did not follow the 2022 wages. Further, the electricity, labour and other production costs had gone up making fabric weaving unviable, they said.
The district Collectors of Tiruppur and Coimbatore have held multiple talks with the job working unit owners and the fabric manufacturers.
“We asked for a 30 % hike from the 2022 wages. The textile manufacturers have agreed for 7 %. This will not help us meet our daily production expenses. Hence, there should be a reasonable hike in the wages. We have decided to go on indefinite fast till the wage demand is met,” he said.
