Bomb threat to Tirunelveli GH, one held

Police have arrested a labourer for issuing bomb threat to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital’s multi-speciality block.

Following a bomb threat phone call received at police control room in the city on Sunday evening that the bomb planted in the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital multi-speciality would shortly go off, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad personnel were deployed in the block in search of explosives. The search, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Vinodh Shantharam, in the seven-storey building and the parking lot, did not yield any explosive.

As the bomb threat turned to be a hoax, the police tracked the caller, who was identified as Muthu Perumal, 42, of Gunjanvilai near Uvari in the district. During interrogation, Muthu Perumal, an alcoholic, told the police that he had a fight with his wife and father-in-law on Sunday and came to the multi-speciality hospital for getting medical treatment.

Since he did not come to the hospital with an attendant, the hospital authorities reportedly told him to bring one person from his family to be with him during his treatment as in-patient. Agitated over this, he made the call to the hospital, the police said.

He was arrested on Monday.
