The police on Monday arrested a 36-year-old man, who bludgeoned a construction worker to death with a cricket bat.
V. Manikandan of Gandhinagar on Pappampatti road near Sulur was arrested for murdering Arumugam alias Sikkanthar, 35, from Sholavandan in Madurai district.
The police said Manikandan had been residing alone after being separated from his wife. He brought his son and daughter to stay with him for some days during the summer vacation.
According to the police, Manikandan arranged a television in an open area near his house to watch the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match with his children. Arumugam, who had been living in the area temporarily for the construction of a building near Manikandan’s house, also came to the spot.
While watching the match, Arumugam allegedly scolded Manikandan’s daughter without provocation. This led to a quarrel between Manikandan and Arumugam. Manikandan picked up a cricket bat and bludgeoned Arumugam on his head and face. He died on the spot, the police said.
After being alerted by neighbours, the Sulur police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to hospital for post-mortem. The police arrested Manikandan and he was remanded in judicial custody on Monday.
