Telangana’s new Act for welfare of gig workers to come into force on May 1
Hyderabad: Aimed at providing social security for gig and platform workers, the Telangana government is all set to introduce a new Act on May 1 — International Workers' Day.
At a review meeting on Monday, chief minister A Revanth Reddy ordered officials concerned to call for public opinion on the draft bill and incorporate the suggestions and feedback from various stakeholders by April 25. Once implemented, Telangana will become the third state in India, after Rajasthan and Karnataka, to have such an Act.
Meanwhile, the chief minister met with gig workers, union representatives, and senior officials from various departments. He proposed several changes and additions to the draft bill, prioritising the welfare of workers and promoting cooperation between companies and aggregators.
He instructed officials to create the draft bill and upload it online to solicit public opinions. Currently, nearly 4,00,000 gig workers in the state are employed as food delivery agents, cab drivers, and package delivery agents. "For the first time in the country, accident insurance is being implemented for gig workers in Telangana," the chief minister stated.
