Lucknow: If over 50 years old, following a fitness routine with a healthy lifestyle can help prevent Parkinson's disease and maintain physical and mental health. Yoga can be a game-changer for elderly people. This was highlighted by experts at an awareness programme on the occasion of World Parkinson's Day, organised by the department of neurology at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) on Saturday. The seminar aimed to educate Parkinson's patients and their caregivers about the disease, its causes, available treatments, and the role of yoga in symptom management.
The seminar was inaugurated by Prof Dinkar Kulshreshtha, who provided an overview of Parkinson's disease along with its early signs. "Maintaining healthy habits in old age with a proper fitness routine can prevent Parkinson's disease," Prof Dinkar stated.
Additional Professor Abdul Qavi highlighted common myths about the disease and current treatment options and said, "Tremors and slowing down should not be ignored."
The neurological and physiological aspects of the disease were explained by Dr Amina Zaidi, and Yoga Acharya Om Narayan Awasthi demonstrated beneficial yoga postures for preventing and managing Parkinson's disease. "Yoga is best fitness routine to be followed by patients of Parkinson's disease, and even to prevent the disease, one should practice yoga after 50 years of age," informed Om Narayan.
Oral hygiene in Parkinson's patients was discussed by Professor Shelly Mahajan from department of dentistry.
