Shantineer adds new meaning to life of the elderly
Guwahati: In a quite corner of the city, lies Shantineer, which is redefining what elderly care looks like. More than just a care centre, it has become a thriving community, where senior citizens are not only looked after but also celebrated for who they are and what they have to offer.
Being a non-profit initiative, it was conceived by a diverse group of individuals from different backgrounds, including doctors, engineers, management professionals and administrators, educators and service holders.
Sadhan Das, the working president of the old age home and a doctor, said the elderly residents are taken care of free of cost, although a few residents finance their own stay here.
He added that the centre aims to make residents feel at home and more included, creating a warm and welcoming environment. "Life begins anew here. The residents actively participate in festive celebrations, cultural programmes and community events, fostering a warm and joyful atmosphere. The centre also encourages its elderly residents to share their wisdom and life lessons with the local communities through educational outreach programmes," Das said.
Launched three years ago, the initiative has been consistently helping residents rediscover a sense of purpose. Reflecting on his own experience, he shared that the journey has also brought renewed energy and meaning to his life and that of others involved.
Das added that the centre made provisions to keeps regular checks on the health of the residents. "When it comes to health and well-being, the facility has a dedicated team of medical professionals who are readily available to offer the highest quality care. Residents receive weekly health check-ups, ensuring that even minor health issues are promptly addressed. A nurse is on call to provide immediate medical attention when needed. Additionally, an in-house psychologist is available to offer emotional support and counselling to residents, helping them navigate challenges and maintain a sense of purpose," he said.
He added that over time, the elderly residents have come to recognise him and greet him warmly, as he has become a familiar and comforting presence in their lives. This growing bond, he said, is one of the most rewarding aspects of his work at the centre.
