BJP fields over 50% women candidates in panchayat polls
Guwahati: Over 50% of the candidates fielded by BJP in the panchayat elections are women, said chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday. He added that a large number of the total candidates are below 40 years of age.
In a post on his X handle, the CM wrote, "Lotus will bloom this Bohag also." He added, "Nominations for #AssamPanchayatPolls concluded yesterday. 59% of our candidates are women. A large number are also under 40, and many won uncontested. The NDA is heading for a landslide victory."
BJP will contest in 325 zila parishads, and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will contest in 72 zila parishads. Ganashakti Party will contest in six Zila Parishads, and Rabha Hasong Joutha Mancha will fight the battle of ballots in five zila Pparishads. A total of 178 out of 325 candidates fielded by the BJP for zila parishads are women.
State president of the party Dilip Saikia and top leaders of the party held several review meetings on Saturday to expedite the upcoming activities. The party leadership also reviewed the work of the social media cell of the party.
CM Sarma will hold 27 rallies for the Panchayat polls, while Party President Saikia will lead more than 50 campaign meetings. Saikia has appealed to every party worker to give their best in support of NDA-backed and publicly supported candidates.
The panchayat elections were due in Assam since Dec last year. However, the state administration could not proceed with the notification of polls due to a bar from a court. The elections will be held next month.
