Condemning the recent increase of ₹50 in domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices, members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a symbolic protest in front of the BSNL office on Friday.

Protesters said the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder had been increased from ₹803 to ₹853, straining household budgets, particularly among low-income families.

As part of the demonstration, women garlanded an LPG cylinder, wore black veils, and sat around it singing oppari (a traditional lament), symbolically mourning the rising cost of essential commodities.

The protest was led by AIDWA district secretary Saraswathi and DYFI district secretary Sethupathy.

CPI(M) Central Committee member K. Balabharathi criticised the Centre’s economic policies, stating that they had deepened the financial burden on women and working-class households. She demanded an immediate rollback of the ₹50 price increase and urged the government to take steps to control inflation, especially concerning essential items such as cooking gas, food, and fuel.
