Did CBSE disaffiliate a school that it had already struck off?
Ahmedabad: Last month, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) disaffiliated 14 schools in Gujarat, including New Tulip International School.
But it has now come to the fore that the school's affiliation with the CBSE expired in March 2023. Sources said New Tulip's management did not pursue the renewal of affiliation thereafter.
However, the school continued its operations, admitting students who even took the board exams.
Later this year, the board disaffiliated the school, citing a violation of bylaws concerning non-attending enrolments. Based on CBSE's affiliation letter from Oct 2020, displayed on the school's website, the board granted "extension of general affiliation" for "senior secondary" for the period from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2023. There was no other communication on display to indicate the affiliation continued beyond 2023.
According to sources, the school's operations continued for two more years until the CBSE's intervention in March 2025 regarding non-attending students. Approximately 2,500 students are enrolled in the school and two batches completed their studies in these two years.
When confronted with these facts, the school's trustee, Yogesh Shridhar, maintained that the institution's CBSE affiliation remains valid. However, he declined further comment, citing the pending status of the school's petition in the Gujarat high court. He stated, "Our case is sub-judice, and the next hearing is on April 24. Till then, I will not comment on this issue."
As soon as the CBSE initiated proceedings for the disaffiliation of 14 schools, New Tulip International School approached the high court.
