₹1.77 crore spent on mitigating wildlife attacks in Kottayam over nine years

As part of the measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, the State government has spent ₹1.77 crore in Kottayam over the past nine years.

An official statement here on Thursday said 53.45 km of solar-powered fencing was installed along the forest fringes to prevent wild animal intrusions. This also included 8.3 km of fencing between Koyikkakkavu and Payasappadi in the Poonjar constituency at a cost of ₹74.4 lakh and 3 km of fencing from Manjalaruvi to Pakanam 504 Nagar at a cost of ₹29.8 lakh.

Similar installations have been erected in the Inchakuzhi–Karasheri (5 km) and Kalaketti Thekkuthottam (5.85 km) areas under the Plachery station limits, in Koppam–Elivalikkara (7.5 km), Panapilavu (5 km), Aruvikkal–Kalaketti (5 km), Karisheri 504 Colony (5 km), Kandankayam–Koruthodu (3.5 km) and Mangapetta 504 Colony (3.5 km) and also between Mampady Estate and Pakanam (1.1 km).

In addition to these, ₹77 lakh was given as compensation to the dependents of those killed in wildlife attacks while ₹1.6 crore was disbursed to those injured. A sum of ₹25.71 lakh was distributed to farmers for crop losses, besides ₹6.39 lakh to those who lost cattle, ₹79.41 lakh was spent on establishing an integrated check post facility at Vazhikkadavu in Poonjar.
