His father Amarchand Sehgal was a tehsildar in the court of the king of Jammu and Kashmir and his mother Kesarbai Sehgal was a housewife. She was a religious woman and often took Sehgal to the temple, where he participated in bhajans and kirtans. In childhood, Sehgal also got a chance to perform in Ramlila. He used to play the role of Mata Sita in Ramlila.

After completing his schooling, he worked as a railway timekeeper. Later, he also joined a company as a salesman. During his work, he got a chance to visit many places in India, and then his fate made him friends with Mehar Chand Jain who lived in Anarkali Bazaar of Lahore. Sehgal, who started his career as a singer, was advised by his friend Mehar Chand to take up acting to hone his talent.

KL Saigal gave his voice to more than 180 songs in his career. People still like to listen to his songs. He sang songs in many languages ​​including Hindi, Bengali and Urdu. However, there is a famous anecdote about Kundan who gave voice to songs like ‘Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya Hum Jeekar Kya Karenge…’ that he used to give voice to songs only when his throat was wet with alcohol.

In 1946, he had to sing the song ‘Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya’ for the film ‘Shahjahan’, and he sang it without touching alcohol. This song became a huge hit and even today people hum it. KL Saigal had said about this song that ‘Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya’ should be played during my last journey and that is what happened.
