The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) staged a protest near the Swadesh Mills on Tuesday seeking withdrawal of the Centre’s amendments to the Waqf Bill that was recently passed in both Houses of Parliament.

Party cadres led by Deva Pozhilan, VCK principal secretary, participated in the protest that condemned the BJP government at the Centre for pushing the amendment ignoring the widespread opposition from Muslim organisations and political parties.

The stir, which was part of protests held simultaneously across Tamil Nadu, flayed the Waqf amendments passed in Parliament well past midnight for allegedly violating the principles of the Constitution and national unity by targeting the rights of the Muslim minority community and fuel a feeling of insecurity, the party said.

According to the VCK, these amendments could not be seen in isolation but were part of the BJP’s a larger plan of perpetrating the politics of hatred against minorities through measures such as Citizenship Amendment Act. The Waqf amendment move ultimately sought to expropriate Waqf properties, the VCK said.
