The district witnessed sudden showers on Sunday night that disrupted power supply in many parts of the district for a few hours.

The district received an average rainfall of 27.95 mm as recorded by all 12 rain gauge stations except for Tiruchuli. After a calm evening, the district saw sudden strong winds accompanied by lightning and thunder.

A lightning strike damaged a stone pillar of sluice of a defunct irrigation tank in K. Karisalkulam late in the night. Locals said it belonged to the Pandya period. The twin pillars were being worshipped by local people. One of the pillars, measuring over 15 feet, broke into three pieces and fell down on the ground.

Trees were uprooted and branches broken in many places that led to power cut after 9 p.m. In Kariyapatti, where the highest rainfall of the district - 64 mm - was recorded, power supply was restored only by 3 a.m.

The rainfall was mostly reported in the eastern parts of the district except for Srivilliputtur on 42.10 mm.

Sivakasi registered 46.80 mm, followed by Kovilankulam 45.40 mm, Virudhunagar 41.20, mm, Sattur 32 mm. Rainfall reported in other places is (in mm): Aruppukottai 19, Periyar Watrap 17, Pilavakkal 14.20, Vembakottai 9.50 and Rajapalayam 4,
