CM Yogi inaugurates ethanol plant in Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the Kayan Distillery ethanol plant in Sahjanwa, Gorakhpur, terming it a major step towards empowering farmers and boosting the national economy.
The CM congratulated all stakeholders on the launch of this new industry under the GIDA (Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority) region.
Yogi said the 30-acre facility with a capacity to scale up to 5 lakh litres will produce 3.5 lakh litres of ethanol daily from grains, directly benefiting farmers and reducing the country's dependence on fuel imports. "This is not a liquor factory, but an ethanol production unit that will eventually power vehicles and aircrafts," he said, adding that the country currently spends Rs 7–8 lakh crore annually on petrol and diesel imports.
"Producing ethanol from surplus grain will save foreign exchange and increase farmers' income by who selling damaged grains, broken rice, stubble, and sugarcane waste to the plant," he said.
Built at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore, the facility will provide direct employment to 2,000 people and indirect employment to a similar number. The CM also handed out appointment letters to newly recruited employees.
During his Gorakhpur visit on Sunday, the chief minister visited residence of noted social worker and leading businessman Arunesh Shahi in Kusmaul village to offer condolences on the demise of his mother, Kirti Shahi.
He also offered prayers to Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
On Sunday evening, the chief minister, who is Chancellor of Mahayogi Gorakhnath University (MGUG), called on the university faculty to adopt contemporary teaching methods and work with full dedication to shape a promising future for students.
Lauding the institution's swift rise, the CM said MGUG is on its way to becoming a role model for higher education across the state and country.
The CM highlighted MGUG's growing stature and noted development of world-class infrastructure, including a 1,475-seat auditorium nearing completion and a proposed 9,500-capacity stadium.
He praised the university for launching MBBS and BAMS courses within four years of its inauguration by former President Ram Nath Kovind in 2021, in addition to its reputed nursing college.
The university has signed MoUs with several prestigious institutions—including AIIMS, KGMU, and IRRI—to boost research, innovation, and start-ups. Vice-Chancellor Dr Surinder Singh and other senior faculty were present during the review.
