Mangaluru: With pre-monsoon rains nearing, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is taking proactive steps to desilt rajakaluves across the city, in order to prevent floods. Past monsoon seasons witnessed waterlogging and clogged drains, leading to artificial floods on streets and homes. MCC's strategy aims at swift clearance of stormwater drains to minimise the risk of inundation.
District minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Saturday discussed how they could avoid the damages to public property due to artificial floods. He directed DC Mullai Muhilan MP and MCC commissioner Ravichandra Naik to take necessary precautions before the onset of monsoon, as there is no dearth of funds.
MCC commissioner said that the city corporation has already floated tenders to desilt all rajakaluves in the city. The commissioner noted that work will be taken up soon after the tender process. Measures will be taken to prevent the recurrence of flooding in the city, he said.
Due to the lack of proper stormwater drains or blockages in rajakaluves, several areas in Mangaluru and parts of DK district witnessed artificial flooding, affecting the traffic movement as well, between June and December last year.
The DC, who is also the MCC administrator, directed MCC officials that similar situations should not repeat in the coming summer.
