Guwahati: A 10-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in Manipur's Churachandpur district, prompting police to act swiftly and apprehend the suspect, who is a juvenile.
On April 4, Manipur Police received information about the girl, originally from Chandel district and currently residing in Churachandpur district, who had been admitted to Churachandpur district hospital following the assault.
"Manipur Police teams, including Women-PS, Churachandpur team, rushed to the District Hospital, Churachandpur District, for enquiry. Later, after identifying the perpetrator, a search was made by police teams within the town at different suspected locations. Finally, the teams were able to successfully apprehend one child in conflict with the law (CCL) from Zion Veng, Tuibong Sub-Division, Churachandpur District, in the evening of the same day," Manipur Police stated on ‘X' on Sunday.
The civil society group Zo Women's Movement condemned the incident in a statement, saying, "Our hearts are broken, and our collective conscience is deeply disturbed by the recent report of alleged repeated rape of a minor girl child — a crime that has once again violated the innocence of one of our most vulnerable members."
The civil society group members said the last victim did not even see justice, and already another child was brutalised. "This pattern cannot continue. We do not want apologies or empty promises. We demand that the perpetrators of these heinous acts face the full weight of the law, and we demand that the victims be given the protection and justice they deserve," read the statement by the group.
This recent case comes shortly after another incident last month, when a nine-year-old girl was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Churachandpur district. The child had gone missing the previous day, and her body, showing multiple injury marks and bloodstains, was discovered near a relief camp for internally displaced persons.
Civil society organisations, including the Zomi Mother's Association (ZMA) and Young Vaiphei Association (YVA), along with political leaders, have strongly condemned these recurring incidents of violence against minors.
