Ropar police arrest 80 drug smugglers in 40 days
Patiala: As part of their ongoing anti-drug campaign, Ropar police registered 51 cases, including 15 under the commercial category, between Feb 22 and April 4, and arrested approximately 80 drug smugglers.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP, Rupnagar) Gulneet Singh Khurana held a meeting with panches, sarpanches, MCs, municipal council presidents, Mohalla Committees, NGOs, residential institutions, NCC, and NSS cadets of various schools and colleges at a palace in Ropar.
He revealed that 17.24 kg of poppy husk, 2.83 grams of poppy plants, 7,484 capsules, 187 narcotic injections, 37.12 grams of heroin, 1.51 kg of narcotic powder, and drug money worth Rs 39,950 were recovered from the arrested smugglers.
The SSP said, in addition to the goal of eradicating drugs from the state through the anti-drug drive, the objective of Project Sampark, run by the Punjab Police, is to strengthen the bond between the police and the public, addressing their issues at the grassroots level and fostering a sense of partnership.
He said suggestions were sought from eminent persons and common people during the Sampark meeting, which would be implemented soon. He mentioned that 178 panchayats of the district passed resolutions not to help drug peddlers to get bail. During the meeting, representatives from villages and cities appealed to officials to uproot the drug problem instead of controlling it.
