Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed Ola to refund ₹1.59 lakh and pay compensation to a customer for failing to deliver an electric scooter, despite receiving full payment over a year ago.
According to official sources, L Saranya, a resident of Gandhi Park area in Coimbatore, made the full payment of Rs 1.59 lakh for an Ola electric scooter at a showroom at Gandhipuram on December 28, 2023.
The showroom staff informed her that the scooter would be delivered by January 16, 2024. They also collected her Aadhaar card for vehicle registration. However, when Saranya visited the showroom on January 16, she was told that the registration process was not yet complete and would take another 10 days.
Even after revisiting the showroom 10 days later, the scooter was not delivered. She was then asked to pay ₹10,862 towards vehicle insurance, which she paid on February 2. Despite making the additional payment, the the showroom failed to deliver the vehicle without providing any valid reason. She subsequently sent a legal notice to the showroom on February 22. Despite receiving the notice, the company neither delivered the scooter nor refunded her money.
Saranya then filed a petition with the Coimbatore District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. In its order, the commission—comprising president R Thangavel and members P Marimuthu and G Suguna—directed Ola to refund ₹1.59 lakh, pay ₹10,000 as compensation for the mental agony caused by the deficiency in service, and ₹5,000 towards the cost of the proceedings.
