3 pose as cops to extort vehicle owners, 2 held in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad: Two persons, including a home guard, were arrested for allegedly posing as police officers and extorting money from vehicles in Modinagar area. They used expired documents to intimidate victims for monetary gain.
Mukesh Giri, 62, is serving as a home guard at Kavi Nagar police station and Kapil Tyagi, works as an electrician allegedly. The third accused, Vishat, remains at large.
Babu Khan, a resident of Lisadi Gate from Meerut said he was travelling with his wife on his motorcycle from Ghaziabad, on April 5, when three people on a motorbike unlawfully stopped him near Ganga River road to examine his documents.
"The accused signalled me to stop. I stopped my bike as one of the people was in uniform. I showed the papers, but the accused threatened me by saying my insurance ended and told me that they would take action against me otherwise pay Rs 1000," he said.
He added that he doubted them as the other two people were covering their faces with red gamchas.
"I asked them to show their ID cards, but they didn't. I took my papers and started my bike to go to my house. But after 200 metres, the accused came on a bike and intervened. They started misbehaving with me, and then I raised an alarm for help." Khan added.
Locals came to Khan's rescue and he dialled 112, following which it was confirmed that the three men were fake cops. However, one of the accused fled before the police arrived.
ACP Modinagar Gyan Prakash Rai stated that upon receiving Khan's call to UP 112, authorities confirmed all three were intoxicated, through a medical examination.
A case was registered under sections 126 (2) (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 318 (4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of BNS, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the third suspect.
