Coimbatore: A leopard which killed a cow calf at Aranmanaikadu in Puravipalayam village a few days ago, in the Pollachi forest range continues to remain elusive. Forest department officials spotted the leopard on Friday night but efforts to trap it were in vain.
A forest officer from the Pollachi forest range in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) said the carnivore killed the cow calf belonging to a farmer, Balasubramaniam, at Aranmaikadu, and left the carcass at the same place. On Thursday, forest frontline staff placed a cage near the carcass in hopes that the leopard would come back for the carcass.
On Friday night, the animal returned to the place to consume the carcass. However, it did not approach the cage and went back into a nearby forest.
The forest department has deployed frontline staff for night patrol in the locality to prevent any potential man-animal conflict, even as further efforts are on to trap the leopard.
