Nagpur: The plan for shifting the Central Jail from the heart of Nagpur city and redevelopment of Mor Bhavan and Ganeshpeth bus stations was reviewed in detail by state revenue minister and district guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule during a meeting with senior officials at Niyojan Bhavan on Saturday.
The long-pending plan of shifting the Central Jail moved a step closer to reality, with state govt finalising a new site for the prison at the Koradi Naka area. Bawankule directed the concerned departments to prepare a detailed plan for the new prison complex, in consultation with expert architects.
He also directed the Town Planning Department, Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA), and Central Jail officials to jointly inspect the identified site at Koradi Naka and submit a comprehensive report for further action.
"The NMRDA inspected the site on Koradi Naka Road for the construction of this jail, and it is possible to build a jail with a capacity of 2,000 prisoners there," Bawankule said. A district-level jail committee has been already formed, and a presentation of the proposed plan will soon be made before the committee.
Along with the shifting of the Central Jail, another major announcement made during the review meeting was the redevelopment of Mor Bhavan and Ganeshpeth bus stations in the city. Both these prominent bus stations, which have long been awaiting modernisation, will now be transformed into five-star level facilities with state-of-the-art infrastructure for commuters.
Bawankule said that the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) will execute the project. These redeveloped stations will not only provide advanced passenger amenities but will also change the face of public transport infrastructure in the city.
The meeting also saw detailed discussions on several other development projects planned for the city. One of the major initiatives was to prepare a detailed plan for constructing a performing art gallery and convention centre near London Street under the Orange City State Project. Bawankule said that the plan will be presented before chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Additionally, development projects will be initiated on Zilla Parishad (ZP) land at three locations —Mouza Ajni, Zingabai Takli, and Badkas Chowk in Mahal. These projects aim to create business opportunities for women's self-help groups and other professionals while generating sustainable income for the ZP.
Present at the review meeting were NMC Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari, ZP CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, MSIDC MD Brijesh Dixit, Additional Commissioner Ajay Charthankar, Vasumana Pant, Vaishnavi B., Deputy Commissioner Milind Meshram, Chief Engineer Leena Upadhyay, Town Planning Department's Rituraj Jadhav, Nagpur Central Jail Superintendent Vaibhav Aage, and other senior officials from the concerned departments.
Meanwhile, minister of state for labour Ashish Jaiswal directed the Labour Department to simplify and speed up the registration and renewal process for construction workers to ensure they receive welfare benefits without hassles. Addressing officials at a review meeting at Ravi Bhavan on Saturday, Jaiswal stressed resolving workers' registration issues at the village level.
