Sale of traditional weapons surges in H’bag
Chatra: The streets of Hazaribag are witnessing a significant surge in the sale of traditional weapons as the city prepares for the grand Ram Navami procession on Monday evening. Local markets are bustling with akhara (club) members and residents purchasing lathis, swords and other traditional weapons, in tune with a centuries-old tradition.
This year's celebration will feature 104 akharas with their members showcasing traditional weapon displays, bringing the festive fervour to its peak. The annual tradition sees residents purchasing not only weapons but also Mahaviri flags and bamboo poles, used in the procession.
Temporary kiosks and shops have sprung up across the city, from main roads to open spaces, catering to the growing demand. Shopkeepers report sourcing intricately designed swords from Delhi and Kolkata, while the majority of supplies come from Nimiaghat in Giridih district. The tradition of sword fighting and lathi displays during Ram Navami has been an integral part of the celebrations for generations.
Babu, a weapon vendor in Okni Mohalla, emphasises the uniqueness of Hazaribag's Ram Navami celebrations. "We begin preparations well in advance," he says, showcasing more than 40 sword designs ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 2,200. Lathis are being sold at Rs 500- Rs 600 per dozen.
Pradeep Kumar, an akhara member and sword-fighting enthusiast, shares his perspective, saying, "This festival goes beyond religious faith. It's a living testament to our glorious traditions."
The procession typically draws between 300,000 to 400,000 devotees annually. However, the traditional weapon displays, while spectacular, have resulted in injuries in previous years. Considering this, the district administration has issued safety guidelines, urging spectators to maintain a safe distance from akhara members during weapon demonstrations.
The celebration represents a unique blend of religious devotion and martial arts tradition, making Hazaribag's Ram Navami procession a distinctive cultural event.
