Pune: The brief respite from intense heat due to recent rains seems to have passed, with day temperatures in the city rising significantly on Sunday. Pashan recorded a high of 41.4 degrees Celsius (°C), marking the highest temperature of the season.
Additionally, the Lohegaon observatory reported a temperature of 41°C, reaching this threshold for the third time this season. This indicates a departure from average temperatures by 3.6°.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that temperatures are expected to rise again to around 40°C, with the potential for rain, thunderstorms and lightning predicted now only around April 10-11.
A senior IMD official told TOI, "Cloudy conditions over the state have diminished due to reduced moisture incursion, which typically occurs only in the evening. However, this does not have any impact on daytime temperatures. Consequently, we are observing high daytime temperatures throughout the state and city."
The recent cloudy conditions and light rainfall provided much-needed relief from oppressive heat, with temperatures in central areas of the city dropping below 35°C for the first time in weeks. The official added, "There is currently no weather system affecting the state. Moisture incursion is expected in some regions after four days, but it will be minimal. Therefore, these regions are likely to experience only light rainfall."
Meteorological stations across the state did not report any significant rainfall. The city experienced sunny conditions throughout the day, with no clouds present, even in the evening hours, according to officials.
In the Marathwada region, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Parbhani recorded temperatures of 40.2°C and 40.7°C, respectively, both above normal by 1.8° and 2.8°.
Heat intensity also notably increased in the Vidarbha region, with eight observatories recording temperatures exceeding 40°C. Akola emerged as the hottest location in the state with a temperature of 43.2°C, which is 3° above normal.
Met officials indicated that the heat intensity across the state is expected to escalate in the coming days, as there are no conditions poised to influence the current weather.
