Tourism Minister R. Rajendran flagged off buses on the extended routes at Salem New Bus Stand on Sunday.
He told reporters old buses were replaced with new ones serving extended routes to cover the rural areas for the benefit of school students and farmers. The bus that was operated from Salem to Pachamalai was extended up to Uppiliapuram and the bus operated from the old Salem bus stand to Omalur was extended till Vazhadasampatti based on the demand from the villagers.
Later, the Minister participated in a function held at Hanging Garden and distributed prizes to winners of various sports events conducted to celebrate Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s birthday.
At the function, Mr. Rajendran said the Chief Minister implemented various welfare schemes for the benefit of women, including free bus travel, Pudhumai Penn Thittam, and the Kalaingar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme. For the women’s self-help groups, several hundred crores of rupees were provided as loans in Salem district. Other states such as West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana were following the schemes implemented in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu was leading in economic development in the country though the Union government did not provide funds to the State properly, Mr. Rajendran added.
