The Villupuram district administration has issued an advisory to all shops and commercial establishments in the district to display their names in Tamil as per the rules by May 15, 2025.

According to Collector Shiek Abdul Rahman, a district level committee comprising officials of departments of Labour Welfare, Tamil Development, Local Administration, and Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, besides representatives of traders, hoteliers and industry associations, have been constituted to inspect and ensure that all shops, commercial establishments and industries have name boards in Tamil language.

As per Section 42 (B) of the Tamil Nadu Catering Establishments Rules, 1959, the name board of every establishment should be in Tamil, followed by English and then other languages if any, with Tamil written predominantly in the name board.

The Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947 and Factories Act, 1948 also mandates Tamil nameboards.

Show cause notices would be issued to shops, commercial establishments and industries that do not comply within the deadline and violators would be penalised, Mr. Rahman said.

He appealed to the associations of traders and industries to sensitise their members to the requirement and cooperate with the district administration to ensure cent percent compliance.
