Man held for breaking glass case of Ambedkar’s statue

Ludhiana: A man was arrested for vandalising the glass case of Dr B R Ambedkar's statue in Jagraon, triggering tension in the area. SSP Ludhiana Rural, Dr Ankur Gupta said that the arrested accused, Hargurpreet Singh of Indra Colony in Jagraon, was drunk when he vandalised the glass case.
The accused smashed the case at around 11.30pm on Saturday but the incident came to light on Sunday morning.
Council president Jatinderpal Rana, councillor Ravinderpal Singh Raju and former councillor Davinderjit Singh Sidu reached the spot and demanded strict action against the culprit. They added that the broken glass case was being replaced immediately. They said that "mischievous elements" were unhappy with planned celebrations of Dr Ambedkar's birth anniversary on April 14 and urged the Punjab government to ensure proper security of the statue to maintain communal harmony.
On receiving information about the incident, DSP, City Jasjyot Singh and SHO, City police station, inspector Virendra Pal Singh reached the spot and launched a probe.
