Stocks pummeled in New York, major indexes off more than 5%

The sell-off for financial markets worldwide is slammed into an even higher, scarier gear Friday. The S&P 500 tumbled 322 points or 5.97% to finish at 5,074 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 2,231 points and closed off 5.5% at 38,314.
