Govt school students taken on heritage tour in Pudukottai

A group of 32 government school students of Gandharvakottai and Perungalur in the district were taken on a heritage tour on Friday to create interest and awareness among them on inscriptions, ancient sculptures and antique icons and the need to preserve and protect them. The tour was organised on behalf of the heritage clubs functioning at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Gandarvakottai and the Government Higher Secondary School, Perungalur.

The students were taken to Perungalur Sri Vamsotharagar Temple where they were shown the inscriptions at the ancient shrine and the sculptures. They were told about the ways to read the inscriptions by A. Manikandan, a research scholar at the Department of Ancient Science, Tamil University, Thanjavur. The students were also shown the sculptures and inscriptions discovered at Manthangudi area.

They were thereafter taken to the Government Museum at Pudukottai where they were explained about the artefacts and other ancient icons being preserved at the museum besides their historical importance. They were also explained about identification of sculptures, year differentiation, ways to protect the ancient artefacts and manuscripts which reflect our history and culture besides the importance of Indian Treasure Trove Act. Museum curator Pakkirisamy also explained about the ancient tools to the students.
