Pune, April 4, 2025 — After days of soaring temperatures, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad experienced light to moderate rainfall on Thursday evening, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated hailstorms, offering much-needed relief to residents.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, Shivajinagar recorded 7.5 mm of rainfall till 8:30 pm, while Pashan recorded 21 MM rainfall. The showers were the result of cumulonimbus cloud formations that began developing over the city and its suburbs around 4 pm. A particularly strong thunderstorm was observed near the Chakan region.

Several localities such as Pashan, Baner, Bavdhan, Katraj, and Sinhgad Road experienced moderate rainfall, while areas like Shivajinagar, Koregaon Park, Chinchwad, and parts of central Pune saw lighter showers. Isolated hailstorms were also reported in Baner and Bavdhan.

IMD Pune attributed the weather to multiple active systems over Maharashtra. These include an upper air cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and Central Maharashtra, and a trough line stretching from South Interior Karnataka to southwest Madhya Pradesh, which is influencing rainfall across central and southern Maharashtra, including Pune district.

The IMD has forecast that rainfall is expected to continue for the next 24 hours, after which a gradual reduction in intensity is likely.

City Disruptions

The sudden downpour led to power outages and tree falls in several parts of the city. The Pune Fire Department reported 11 tree fall incidents, with two resulting in vehicle damage—one each in Hadapsar and Kumthekar Road. In Bavdhan, a tree collapsed onto an electric distribution point, causing a localised power failure.

Authorities are urging citizens to stay alert as weather conditions continue to fluctuate. Efforts are underway to clear fallen trees and restore disrupted power supply in affected areas.Pune 24 Hrs Rainfall(mm) dt. 04.04.2025
