The food merchants have been directed to sell packed food products with manufacturing and expiry dates.

According to an official release, a dictum was issued to them at the restaurant owners’ association meeting held at the Thanjavur District Collectorate on Friday. Chairing the meeting, Collector Priyanka Pankajam directed them to display the date of manufacturing and expiration of the products, especially sweets and savouries sold in retail, on the packages.

Insisting that those in food business should have undergone food safety training and obtained FoSTaC certificate and or they should employ a FoSTaC certificate holder/s, the Collector urged them to obtain hygiene rating certificate for their outlets without fail.

Further, she asked them to handover the used oil for the manufacturing of foods/food products to the collection agents appointed for the collection of repurpose used cooking oil (RUCO). Around 6,700 litres of RUCO have been collected last month, she pointed out.

They were also asked to desist from using banned one-time-use plastic packaging materials for delivering tea, coffee, ‘sambar’, ‘kuruma’ and other hot food items to the customers, the release added.
