Flouting directives
That certain governments in north India have devised their own system of instant justice is shocking. It is obvious that it has never struck these overzealous governments that such acts are arbitrary and extra-judicial. Detailed norms have been issued by the courts on such demolitions. It remains to be seen whether such power-drunk governments will follow the directives and laws in force.

‘Elephant-dragon tango’
China’s call to strengthen ties with India is welcome (Inside pages, “Xi Jinping calls for ‘elephant-dragon duet’ on 75th anniversary of ties between India, China”, April 2). Yet, vigil is paramount. New Delhi must remain acquainted with various surveillance reports as the world is well aware of China’s stand when it comes to respecting the territorial integrity and the sovereignty of neighbouring countries.

If the signals are really what they mean then it could spell positive change. But India can extend the hand of cooperation only after satisfying itself that the ground developments are safe. Yes, if China makes a single, sincere and positive step, India can go two steps further.

Minister’s account
The Union Education Minister’s lucid account of the salient features of the New Education Policy of 2020, should put to rest the misplaced fears of the leaders of the Opposition parties. His account of the edifice of the NEP being built on the five pillars of access, equity, quality, accountability and accommodation, and the presentation of statistical data in support of his opinion that the focus is also on women as well as those who are marginalised must be appreciated (Editorial page, April 2).
