Pune: The increasing number of speeding vehicles in Pune is proving fatal for pedestrians. In the past week alone, three pedestrians, including two senior citizens, have lost their lives in separate hit-and-run incidents across the city. The absence of CCTV cameras in certain areas is making it difficult for the police to trace the culprits.

In a recent case, Sujitkumar Singh (49), a resident of Undri, was killed after being hit by a speeding vehicle while out for a morning walk on the Katraj-Mantrawadi bypass road near Nyati Ebony society in Undri. Similarly, Arun Joshi (60) lost his life in a hit-and-run accident on BMCC Road in Deccan Gymkhana. Another tragic incident took place in Yerwada, where Amina Karim Meghani (60) was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle while crossing Nagar Road.

Hit-and-run cases are on the rise in Pune, with drivers fleeing the scene after hitting pedestrians or two-wheeler riders. The police rely on CCTV footage to track down the accused, but in areas lacking surveillance cameras, investigations become challenging.

Black Spots Identified for Accident Prevention
Authorities have identified 24 accident-prone locations in the city. To prevent further mishaps, Pune’s traffic police, the district administration, and the National Highways Authority have planned long-term measures.

Increased Pedestrian Signal Timing
With traffic speed increasing on major roads like Nagar Road and Solapur Road after recent infrastructure improvements, authorities have extended pedestrian signal timings from 20 seconds to 30 seconds to ensure safer road crossings.

According to police statistics, Pune recorded 59 accidents resulting in 62 deaths in January and February 2025 alone. Authorities continue to urge drivers to adhere to speed limits and prioritize pedestrian safety.
