Kolkata, April 3, 2025 – West Bengal is set to witness a significant shift in weather conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall in parts of the state starting Thursday. As per the Alipore weather office, districts in the coastal and western regions are expected to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, potentially bringing down temperatures across the state.
Rain Alert Issued for West Bengal’s Coastal and Western Regions
According to weather scientists, a trough line extending from North Bengal to Madhya Pradesh, passing through Bihar and Chhattisgarh, is responsible for the current changes. Additionally, another trough extends from Lakshadweep to the Konkan coast, adding to the moisture influx. Cyclonic systems near Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh borders are intensifying the situation by drawing moisture into Bengal, increasing the chances of rain.
Starting today, East and West Medinipur and Jhargram are expected to receive rainfall with wind speeds reaching 30–40 km/h. By Friday, the rainfall zone will expand into South Bengal, with Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, and surrounding regions predicted to receive thunderstorms and isolated downpours.
North Bengal Also Braces for Showers
The IMD has projected increased rainfall in North Bengal, particularly in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri from Friday. By Sunday, the intensity of the rains is expected to increase, covering Malda and neighboring districts. By Monday and Tuesday, widespread rainfall is expected from Darjeeling to Malda, with strong gusty winds and thunderstorm activity across North Bengal.
Kolkata to See Wetter Days Ahead
In Kolkata, both maximum and minimum temperatures have dipped slightly below average, but humidity levels remain high, contributing to an uncomfortable sticky heat. The city is likely to experience thundershowers from Wednesday, with a higher chance of rain by Tuesday next week.
Meteorologists advise residents across Bengal to stay alert as rainfall intensity may vary across districts. Travelers and farmers are particularly advised to monitor regional updates due to shifting weather dynamics.
