New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) The landmark Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on Monday received the Parliament's nod with the Rajya Sabha clearing the provision, aimed at giving more financial powers to field officers for streamlining and modernising railway operations in India.
Panaji: Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade on Thursday demanded in Parliament the construction of a flyover at the railway crossing at Davorlim to reduce congestion and accommodate traffic from the upcoming educational hub in the South Goa village.
He said residents face daily hardships in the Navelim constituency due to the railway crossing at Davorlim. “This crucial link connects Davorlim to Aquem-Baixo and key towns such as Quepem and Cuncolim, as well as several neighbouring villages, playing a vital role in regional connectivity,” he said.
Tanavade highlighted that the railway crossing is the first after Margao railway station, a major junction in Goa, which experiences heavy train movement, with over 20 to 30 trains passing daily.
“The gate remains closed for 20-25 minutes per cycle, causing severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. This disruption affects students, working professionals, and commuters, forcing many to take longer routes, leading to unnecessary inconvenience, traffic jams, fuel wastage, and increased travel time,” he said.
“There is a strong public demand for a flyover at this railway crossing. More than 30,000 people, including residents of Curtorim, Navelim, and Velim constituencies, as well as surrounding villages and Margao town, will benefit from this much-needed infrastructure,” Tanavade said.
The MP further said that the flyover will significantly reduce congestion and accommodate increased traffic from the upcoming educational hub at Davorlim, which will house over 30 schools from Margao and surrounding constituencies.
“I urged govt to take immediate steps for its construction, ensuring smoother and safer transportation for the people of Goa,” he said.
