CPI(M) opposes hike in diesel price, toll rates on National Highways

The Communist Party of India (Marxists) on Wednesday opposed the State government hiking the price of diesel by ₹2 per litre with effect from April 1 midnight. It also condemned the Union government hiking the toll rates on the National Highways up to 4% and 5%.

Calling the hike “anti-people”, Sunil Kumar Bajal, member, Dakshina Kannada committee of the party, said that price rise have hit people. People are already reeling under the recent hike in milk price, power tariff, and solid waste management cess, he said adding that the government should withdraw the hike.

The State government hiking the rate of sales tax on diesel from 18.44% to 21.17%, an increase of 2.73 percentage points, has pushed the diesel price per ₹2 a litre. The government justifying the hike by comparing it to the prevailing rates in the neighbouring States is meaningless, Mr. Bajal said.

The CPI(M) said that the State government to adjust funds for its guarantee schemes has “imposed price hike on the life of common people“. He said that the NHAI hiking toll rates has hit tourists and other commuters hard.

The Congress and the BJP are two faces of the same coin, he said alleging that policies of the two governments are aimed at appeasing the corporate sector.
