Bhubaneswar: BJD MP Sasmit Patra in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday demanded the inclusion of Ho, Mundari, Bhumij, Kui and Saora languages in the Eighth Schedule of Constitution.
"These languages are not just modes of communication; they are the lifeblood of millions of tribal people across multiple states. Their recognition is essential for preserving India's linguistic and cultural diversity and upholding the constitutional commitment to protect the rights of Scheduled Tribes," Patra, who raised the issue during Zero Hour, said.
These languages are spoken in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and in some parts of Bihar. "Their exclusion from the Eighth Schedule denies recognition, developmental support and constitutional protection to millions of indigenous people across multiple states," Patra added.
"BJD president and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik wrote multiple letters to the Centre, urging immediate action on the matter. This is not just a linguistic issue — it is a matter of justice, dignity and constitutional equality for millions of indigenous citizens," he said.
According to official sources, the inclusion of a particular language will help in its preservation, promotion and propagation and the culture associated with it. Activities like publication, creation of content and recognition will gain momentum because of the inclusion, state govt sources said.
