A KSRTC bus driver, who suffered a heart attack while driving, died after fatally knocking down an elderly pedestrian near Dammanakatte in H.D. Kote taluk near here on Wednesday.
KSRTC sources said the driver Sunil Kumar, around 35 years old, was working with the corporation as an outsourced employee. He suffered a heart attack around 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday while driving the bus that plies between Mananthavadi in Kerala and Mysuru.
The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle near Dammanakatte in H.D. Kote taluk and knocked down an elderly woman, identified as Lakshmamma, before hitting an electric pole on the roadside and coming to a halt after entering an adjacent field.
Though the passengers escaped unhurt, Lakshmamma died on the spot due to the injuries while Sunil Kumar, who lost consciousness and fell on the steering wheel after suffering a heart attack, also passed away.
The passengers alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and shifted the deceased to the mortuary at H.D. Kote Government Hospital. KSRTC officials also arrived at the spot and arranged alternative transportation for the stranded passengers.
A case has been registered at Antharasanthe police station.
