A Village Administrative Officer (VAO) and Village Office Assistant of Thalakkulam village under the Kalkulam taluk were arrested by officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption on Wednesday for allegedly taking bribe from a contractor.

According to the complaint filed by G. Arumugan, 56, from Neyyoor, VAO S. Amala Rani had demanded a bribe of ₹4,000 for issuing a solvency certificate required for a contract work. Later, she reduced the amount to ₹3,000 for issuance.

Acting on a complaint, the team led by C. Salvian Thurai, DSP of DVAC Kanniyakumari, met Mr. Arumugam, who went to the VAO’s office and handed over ₹3,000 to M. Baby, village office assistant, as per the instruction of Amala Rani, when DVAC officials hiding in the office caught the village assistant red handed.
