Udaipur: Senior Congress member and former Union minister Girija Vyas is in critical condition and is in ICU at Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad. She suffered burn injuries during the Gangaur puja at her home in Udaipur.
Jasmine Shah, head of operations at the hospital, described her condition as serious, stating that Vyas sustained 89% burns. She also suffered a brain infarct due to a head injury from the fall.
Vyas's brother, Gopal Sharma, expressed hope for her speedy recovery, emphasising her importance in their lives. Congress members have communicated with her family, wishing for her quick recovery.
On Monday, Vyas, aged 78, suffered severe burn injuries after her saree accidentally caught fire while performing Gangaur puja at her home. She was taken to a private hospital in Udaipur and was later referred to Ahmedabad after initial treatment.
Vyas held significant positions as a senior Congress member, both at the state and central levels. She served as the state Congress president and was a minister in both the state and central govts. She was the chairperson of National Commission for Women twice. From 1985 to 1990, she was an MLA and served as the minister of state for tourism in the Rajasthan govt.
