300 students get training in swimming
T'puram: Under the Swim Safe programme of the general education department, in support with UNICEF, about 300 students from Ambalathara and Poojappura upper primary schools received training in swimming.
Education minister V Sivankutty, who awarded certificates to students, said swimming training will be extended to more schools across state. "Through swimming training, we are not only teaching a life skill but also safeguarding our future. Learning to swim equips individuals with the confidence and ability to protect themselves and others in emergencies. The need for water safety education has never been more crucial. The Swim Safe programme conducted at Ambalathara and Poojappura UP schools marks a significant step in the education sector," he said.
The curriculum, in which swimming and water safety were included, is designed with a broad and practical perspective to help students develop a deep understanding of health, physical fitness and activities. The swimming pool under construction at Nedumangad Govt School will provide swimming training facilities not only for children but also for mothers, he added.
The training at Ambalathara and Poojappura UP schools was led by George Institute for Global Health and Royal Life Saving. A sum of Rs 10 lakh was allocated for the construction of the swimming pool and training.
The minister said beyond school-level initiatives, the state govt is implementing various programmes to promote swimming education and increase water safety awareness.
