Sugar production expected to be 12% lesser than last season

Sugar production till March in the current marketing season is 18 % lower than last sugar season, after diversion for ethanol, according to the Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA).

With 95 of 534 sugar mill are continuing operations across the country, the total production so far (October 2024 to March 2025) is 247 lakh tonnes as against 301 lakh tonnes produced between October 2023 and March 2024. As many as 48 mills in Uttar Pradesh and 16 in Tamil Nadu are continuing operations. The diversion for ethanol in 2023-2024 sugar season was 19 lakh tonnes and this year, it is expected to be 33 lakh tonnes. So, the total sugar production for this season is likely to be 12 % lower than last year.
