The police arrested one person and seized 19 gunny bags containing banned gutkha and tobacco products at Kavanipakkam near Villupuram on Monday.

Following a tip-off on the movement of the contraband, a special police team intercepted an SUV, signalling it to stop at Thennamadevi toll plaza. But the driver of the vehicle sped away, prompting the police to chase them. The team intercepted the SUV at Kavanipakkam and arrested R. Murugan, 29.

The police searched the vehicle and seized 19 gunny bags containing the contraband.

Police said the vehicle was enroute to Villupuram from Bengaluru. The seized gutkha is valued at approximately ₹3 lakh, as per initial estimates. The police have launched a search to nab two others who are at large.
