Chennai: A 23-year-old auto driver drowned during a swimming race with his relatives in a quarry near Vandalur on Sunday.
Police said Rashid, a resident of Guduvancherry, had gone to visit his relatives in Vandalur for Ramzan. He, his brother-in-law and two others, went to a quarry in Rathinamangalam for a swim. They decided to race there. Rashid, after making it to the other side, lost his footing while waving to his friends. He slipped, fell back into the water, and drowned.
His friends searched for him but were unable to locate him. They informed the Thazhambur police, who alerted the Maraimalai Nagar fire services personnel. The body is yet to be recovered.
