Eighteen sheep were killed by stray dogs at Kodumanal Panankadu, near Chennimalai, on Monday night.

Vijayakumar reared 20 sheep on his farm when dogs entered the shed and attacked them. Many sheep fled the shed, but they were chased and killed by the dogs. A total of 14 sheep were killed on his farm. Similarly, attacks were also reported at farms owned by Ramasamy at Palatholuvu Rasampalayam, who lost a sheep, and Thirumoorthy in the same village, who lost two goats. , while another sheep owned by Dhandapani was also killed. A few injured sheep were taken to the veterinary hospital for treatment.

The incident has caused panic among farmers and residents, who have demanded effective measures to prevent further attacks on livestock.

With stray dog attacks continuing in Erode and Tiruppur districts, the State government announced compensation last month for farmers whose cattle and poultry were killed by stray dogs. The government will provide ₹37,500 for cattle, ₹6,000 for sheep or goats, and ₹200 for poultry as compensation. The amount will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
